Activity 2: Journey of a Grain
1. Put a tick (✔) on the elements that assist a grain in its journey.
The elements that assist a grain are: Soil (✔), Air (✔), Water (✔), Farmer (✔), Earthworm (✔), Insect (✔).
1. What is the role of farmers in this process?
Farmers play the most important role. They sow the seeds, water the plants, remove weeds, add manure, and harvest the crops when they are ready.
2. List out the missing elements in the table above.
Missing elements that are also important are: Sunlight (for photosynthesis) and Manure (for nutrients).
Can you list the roles of the different elements involved in this journey?
- (a) Soil: Provides nutrients, water, and support for the plant to grow.
- (b) Water: Essential for the seed to sprout and the plant to make its food.
- (c) Farmer: Cultivates the land, sows seeds, and takes care of the crop.
- (d) Cattle: Help in ploughing the fields and provide manure.
- (e) Shopkeeper: Sells the grains to us.
- (f) Family members: Clean the grains and cook them for us to eat.
- (g) Any other: Sunlight helps the plant make food (photosynthesis).
Activity 3: Discuss
1. What role does your tongue play in this process?
Our tongue helps us to taste the food. It also helps in mixing the food with saliva and pushing it down the throat.
2. What do your teeth do to the food?
Our teeth help to chew and grind the food into smaller pieces, making it easier to swallow and digest.
3. What happens to the food inside your mouth during this process?
Inside our mouth, the food gets mixed with saliva, which starts the process of digestion. The teeth break it down into a soft paste.
Activity 4: Food Record
What will you do-
1. If someone offers you food more than you need?
I will politely say 'No, thank you' and explain that I cannot eat more, as we should not waste food.
2. If you do not like a food item on your plate?
I will try to eat a small portion of it. If I really cannot eat it, I will politely inform my parents instead of just throwing it away.
Activity 5: Physical Activity
1. Which physical activities do you do in your daily life?
In my daily life, I do activities like walking to school, playing with friends in the evening, cycling, and sometimes helping with chores at home.
2. How do you feel on a day when you play a lot?
On a day when I play a lot, I feel very happy, energetic, and active. At night, I feel tired and get good sleep.
Activity 6: Sleep Record
1. Why do you think our body needs rest?
Our body needs rest to recover from the day's work, repair its cells, and regain energy for the next day. Rest helps our mind and body to relax.
2. Do you think it is important to rest after a busy day of exercise and play? Why?
Yes, it is very important to rest after a busy day. Rest allows our muscles to recover, prevents injuries, and helps us feel fresh and energetic again.
Activity 7: Safety
1. What would you do if someone's touch made you feel uncomfortable?
I would immediately move away from that person, firmly say 'No', and tell my parents or a trusted teacher about it.
2. If you face an unsafe situation, who would you tell?
I would tell my parents, grandparents, teachers, or an elder sibling whom I trust completely.
3. List two situations where you would firmly say 'No'.
1. If a stranger offers me candy or a toy and asks me to go with them.
2. If someone tries to touch me in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable.
✦ Let us reflect ✦
1. If the following are missing, what would happen to a food grain?
If soil is missing, the seed will not get nutrients or a place to grow, so it will not become a plant.
3. Which activities did you enjoy during your 'mindful eating'?
During 'mindful eating', I enjoyed noticing the different colors on my plate, smelling the aroma of the food, and feeling the texture of each bite.
4. How can you keep your body strong?
Exercises: Yoga, stretching, jogging, skipping.
Games: Football, badminton, hide-and-seek, swimming.
5. Which habits would you practice daily? Indicate your plans.
My plan is to:
- Wake up early every morning.
- Do yoga and simple exercises for 20 minutes.
- Eat a balanced diet on time and avoid junk food.
- Play outdoor games every evening.
